This is really a good breakfast, oh yeah!! Such a classic in all the Spanish families of the Sunday’s breakfasts, churros with hot chocolate. But as we are in January and we must recover from the excesses of Christmas, this recipe of churros is a lighter version made in the oven and therefore with less fat. And I also explain how to make a real Spanish hot chocolate, as thick as I like it.
Holidays are over and here we are back to the recipe routine of the blog. And to start the year I wanted to do something easy and quick. Also, I think this breakfasts recipes motivates you quite a bit, so here’s another one!
Ah!! And by the way, this is post number 100 of the blog!! So, happy about it!!! The recipe is probably not up to such an event, but neither had I planned it, honestly. I have just realized now when publishing. Well, but for the next one I’ll compensate it, I have a special recipe for the first anniversary of the blog, but I do not bring forward events that then, it will not be a surprise.
About the recipe, as I said at the beginning, to do baked churros is something I wanted to try so they are not as greasy as the originals fried ones. But the truth is, that fried are much better!! It is not bad this baked version, but they don’t taste like churros, the taste is more like a sponge cake.
A good point is that they are nicely toasted, gold brown and crispy if you serve them just took them from the oven. So, the perfect texture, but the taste, well, it is not the same of course! But as we are all now with the purpose of losing those extra kilos that we have won with so many excesses in Christmas, I think it is worth the test them.
For the hot chocolate, as I explained you here, you do not have to worry too much, if you do it with dark chocolate, using water and you do not add extra sugar, it is suitable for any kind of diet!! Besides, I love it as it is, with that super intense chocolate flavor. I have used one of the best ones that exist in the market (in my opinion), but that is only sold in Catalonia. So, for those who cannot buy this type of “Xocolata a la pedra”, I leave you a recipe as an alternative for a very similar result.
In a saucepan heat the water with the sugar and the butter stirring occasionally for the butter to melt. When it boils remove from the heat. Pour all the flour in the saucepan and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until you get a dough that peels off the walls. Let the dough stand a little so that it is tempered. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200 ° C and prepare a baking sheet with baking paper. Add an egg stirring well until it is completely integrated, it will cost a little but just insist, if you have an electric hand mixer you can use it to make it easier. When the first egg is integrated, you can add the second and continue mixing until you have a smooth dough. Fill a pastry bag with the dough and, using the tip you like most, pipe the churros on the baking sheet. I have made some in the shape of a bow and some straight ones. Bake at 200 ° C for about 25 minutes, or until golden. Remove from oven and sprinkle with sugar before serving. The churros are usually served hot. To prepare the hot chocolate, in Catalonia you can find special chocolate tablets that have thickener to make the hot chocolate very thick, which is what I have used and the one you see in the photos. This one, in particular, has a cinnamon aroma that I love!! There are also powdered preparations that give very good results. In that case, each one can follow the instructions of the package or the chocolate tablet to prepare it. If you live in a country where you do not have access to these prepared solutions, you can do it very easily with the ingredients that I have given you. Grate the chocolate or chop it into pieces as small as you can. Heat the milk (or water) and pour the chocolate, stirring to dissolve. When the chocolate has melted add the corn-starch and cinnamon. Bring to a boil stirring constantly so it does not stick. If you want it more sweet you can add sugar, of course.Baked Churros and the real Spanish Hot Chocolate
